Hardy vs Lytle at the UFC on Versus 5 Weigh Ins. Image via MMA Junkie

Tonight should be a real showcase for the submission arts at the UFC on Versus 5 card in Milwaukee, Wisconsin tonight. Although we’ve been promised a stand’n’bang affair in the main event between Dan Hardy and Chris Lytle, I’m really opening for an awesome combination submission from Chris Lytle like his amazing Head Scissor / Straight Arm Lock combo he pulled off against Matt Brown just over a year ago. Interestingly I remember reading somewhere that Lytle considers his grappling more Catch Wrestling based, although clarified he meant more no gi based since he rarely if ever trains in the gi associated with jacket arts like Judo and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Also on the card is Jim Miller vs Ben Henderson, two top lightweights vying for a title shot and two wrestlers who have added submissions to their game. I expect the mean streak and New Jersey tough in Miller to be the deciding factor in this fight.

There’s also the cocky Charles Oliveira who looks to use a dynamic guard game on the ground to catch opponent’s off guard. He was humbled somewhat by Jim Miller when they fought earlier this year but he’s yet to face a Wrestler that completely shuts him down on the ground. His opponent tonight in Donald Cerrone is well rounded and a veteran and could beat Oliveira on that alone so we shall see.

There’s also Jacob Volkmann, a Greco-Roman wrestler training out of the excellent Minnesota MMA with Greg Nelson. We’ve not seen much of a submission game out of him thus far, but he’s been gradually showing of his great top control and back rides over his UFC career thus far.

Hopefully there’ll be lots of action and the fights don’t disappoint, especially if we get to see more of this!
